Mildred’s Temple Kitchen

I woke up one morning craving something sweet, fluffy and covered in whipped cream.  So that only meant one thing, breakfast at Mildred’s Temple Kitchen.  I have seen a lot of instagram pictures of their famous pancakes, so D, JS and I went over for Sunday brunch. When we arrived the hostess seemed a little frazzled. We later found out it was because there should have been two people working that morning instead of one. We were told the wait would be 45 minutes and seeing as none of us were that hungry we decided to walk around liberty village. After 45 minutes and an impromptu grocery store run we headed back to find that our table was STILL not ready.  We decided to wait at the bar and ended up chatting with Michael, the manager. We told him how hungry we were and he graciously got us a table ASAP. He was very kind and made the experience much better.

I originally wanted the pancakes, but once I saw that they had some great egg dishes I was torn.  Thankfully Michael let us in on a little secret; you can order one pancake and share with the table!

So, I ordered the Veda’s Choice – poached eggs on a flakey croissant with rosemary bacon, topped with Béarnaise sauce & served with mixed greens. I swapped the salad for potatoes.

I really enjoyed this dish and found it to be very filling. The bacon had a nice flavour to it and the potatoes were cooked very well.

My choice

My choice was Veda’s Choice

JS ordered the Little Kay’s Favourite Grilled Cheese Sandwich – aged Canadian cheddar on grilled sourdough with pickles & tomato relish. She loved this dish. The relish added an extra kick to the cheese and everything complemented each other very well.

D (the vegetarian) ordered the Huevos Monty Mildred’s classic – black bean refritos (refried beans) & sharp cheddar cheese baked in flour tortillas and topped with eggs sunny, fresh salsa & avocado crème fraîche. She substituted the sunny side up eggs for scrambled egg whites. While it did taste good she felt that this was a dish she could have made at home.

And of course, we ordered a pancake to share. This dish definitely lived up to the hype. The pancake was thick with blueberries, whipped cream and maple syrup. The pancake batter tasted more like cake, which we were all ok with. My mouth is watering as a type this!

Whipped cream magic

Pancake + Whipped Cream = Magic

A few tips. Try and go AFTER the lunch rush if you can hold off. When we left the place was virtually empty with no 1-hour wait for a table. This place is quite large and can accommodate lots of parties. And, whatever you do, get the pancakes!

The best: The cake-like pancakes!

Not the best: The service. We waited 40 minutes for our food and another 30 minutes just to get the cheque (this is not the first time that has happened to me here). We spent what felt like 3 hours in Mildred’s so be prepared for slow service.
